Ambulance service in Toronto has roots that go back to 1847. This humble start consisted of private cabs and good Samaritans transporting infectious patients and those suffering from injury or illness. In the 1870's, the city contracted a local Undertaker, Michael McCabe of Queen Street to carry out this role. During the 1880's, Toronto General Hospital started an ambulance service as did the Toronto Police and the Department of Health. Various private ambulance services started to appear in 1905 and remained a part of Toronto's Emergency Service until 1975. The delivery of ambulance service fluctuated greatly over the years. At one point, you had the choice of calling over twenty-seven ambulance services plus the City of Toronto Department of Public Health Ambulance. After many years of studies, debate and public outrage of poor ambulance service the decision was made to amalgamate Toronto's fragmented system into a unified service operated by the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto under the newly formed Department of Ambulance Services.
