Toronto EMS celebrated EMS Week from May 18-23, 2008.
This year’s theme was “Your Life is Our Mission.” On that note, Toronto EMS’ highly skilled paramedics and Emergency Medical Dispatchers met with residents throughout the City of Toronto to share information about the life-saving work they do, to demonstrate some of the tools of the trade, and to educate people about how they should handle medical emergencies when they occur.
These were some of our public EMS Week events:
Sunday, May 18 2008 - Yonge-Dundas Square, where Toronto EMS and other Ontario emergency medical services had vehicles and equipment on display. Paramedics also acted out medical scenarios, and staff was available to talk to the public.
Tuesday, May 20 2008 - Toronto EMS had an informational display at the Hospital for Sick Children. Chief Bruce Farr read stories to patients in the afternoon, and the Toronto EMS mascot PG Bear also made an appearance. This was a great chance for parents to meet the paramedics who may be called upon to help their children in a
medical emergency, and to get information about injury prevention.
Thursday, May 22 2008 - Toronto EMS visited recreation centres for senior citizens throughout the city. Since seniors account for a large number of EMS calls, we were excited to have the chance to meet them in a non-emergency situation, and to talk to them about our jobs. Paramedics visited Fairfield Seniors’ Centre, Stephen Leacock Recreation Centre, and Port Union Community Recreation Centre.
Friday, May 23 2008 - Toronto EMS had an interactive display at the Ontario Science Centre. Visitors had the chance to make a mock 911 call and try out chest compressions on a mannequin, along with other hands-on activities. There is a lot of science involved in the work we do at EMS, and we were thrilled to be able to share that with the public!
